Hi My Akita Is 7 In November i took her to the vets This week and she said that her reaction time in her eyes are slow. Is this common? I have a 8 year old who is the Joy of my life.He loves my wife and I have no doubt He would protect her with His life.He is Dog Agressive and does not like strange animals around His Territory.He was the easiest dog to Housebreak but as the wife says He gets underfoot always.

My question is what should I look far in a Hip condition.We run a 1 1/2 miles twice daily and he still gets my wife to take him out back.

We have had 2 Samoyed's in the past, both getting to 15 but sadly our last recently passed away. This week we went to pickup an item purchased on Ebay from a local couple and they had an Akita called Star. What a lovely breed, beautiful and friendly. We have had the pleasure of owning Ripley (Brindle)for approx. 7 months now, and by the best dog we've owned. We rescued her from our local Humane Society, so her history is but a mystery to us. Unfortunately she is spayed, so we cannot breed her, but I do look forward to getting a puppy soon and possibly start our own line of champions. Ripley is great with our 3 cats, and is like a little child when it comes to play time. I have an Akita dog he will be three in November. Not sure if you can give me any tips on recal. He does not get on with other dogs now he was alright up to about 20 months then he change been to puppy classes. Will do, sit stay , stand , wait, down. leave ( food ) General. Most when he feels like it. When of the lead his whole attitude changes - ears more alert than usual and then could be off like a short. Recall again if nothing else more amusing , he will come back just out of reach so you cant put his lead back on. Goes wild if a hedge hog is in the garden been known to pick it up in his mouth and roll on it by the back of his neck, not sure if you have ever experienced this. He has no company so we are thinking if getting a bitch this might calm him down. Any advice would be greatly be appreciated.Oh he is not food orientated as you may know..

Just sending you an update on Dollar. He has come on in leaps and bounds. I am very proud of him. Still have alot of work to do, but we are getting there. He is very clever and picks quite alot up quite quickly. Area's to work on are handling his head still, as occasionally he thinks he still needs to be head shy. Although our trainers are happy with how well he has come on. He is very sociable with other dogs and has had people in puppy class stroke him and handle him . We're going to see an 18 month old male akita tonight that will otherwise be homeless if we are unable to take it on.It has been raised with children and two other dogs for the first 12 months but then moved to another home for the past 6 and now they've decided it's too much for them.
I was browsing the net for info and came upon your site, I must say it is excellent. my only fears for this evening are that the dog has not been raised very well and we may be faced with a problem dog. We will probably take it on trial and see how it goes anyway.
Both myself and my partner are keen dog lovers and recently lost our 16 year old tibetan spaniel. previous to that we have had dogs in our families, labrador, german shepherd, border collies and various mongrels so we feel very suitable owners.
I feel a little sorry for the akita we are going to see as it deserves a stable and permanent home. I hope the moving around won't have affected it's temprement at all.
